On Wednesday evening, September 3rd, Ernie Boyer will give a Way Seeking Mind talk followed by a discussion.
Ernie Boyer first began exploring Zen over 50 years ago. It has been a long and meandering journey. (The tree in the background of his picture is the Bodhi Tree in India, under which the Buddha sat and became enlightened.) Along the way he decided that he was a Christian as well as a Buddhist. He got a doctorate in theology and worked for a number of years as a hospital chaplain before becoming an Episcopal Priest. (The Episcopal Church is a Christian denomination, a sort of very liberal form of Catholicism.) He first began to sit at Kannon Do in 2008. He attended the daily noon sittings that were then available 2-3 times a week until they were suspended. He returned to Kannon Do last October, determined to give himself fully to the practice. He now sits with the group every morning at 5:30 and has helped initiate a noon sitting on Thursdays. He is also a member of the Kannon Do board. He lives in Mountain View and is currently the priest at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Gilroy. He sees no conflict in this whatsoever, believing, in fact, that he could not be a Christian without also being a Buddhist. All this will be the subject of his way-seeking talk.
