In-person Dharma Talk: Jane Flint

April 16 @ 7:55 pm - 9:00 pm

On Wednesday evening, April 16th, Jane Flint, teacher at Everyday Zen Foundation, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion.

Jane Flint was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She lived in Ohio, Seattle, California, and South and North Carolina before moving to Silicon Valley in the late 1980s. A member of Everyday Zen, she was ordained as a priest by her teacher, Norman Fischer, in 2022.

Jane discovered Zen while attending college in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in the late 1960s and began practicing zazen at that time. She studied philosophy and tai chi, as well as film and video, in college. She earned a master’s degree in human development and obtained California teaching credentials.

She married in 1973 and moved to a sea island off the coast of South Carolina (Yonges Island), where she lived from 1974 to 1983. She traveled throughout the state, teaching puppetry, animation, and video in schools. She moved to the mountains of North Carolina from 1983 to 1987, managed the Radio, TV, and Film department at the North Carolina School of the Arts, and continued to produce animations and children’s television programs.

She divorced in 1987 and moved to California with her 6-year-old son. She taught after-school daycare at the Palo Alto Jewish Community Center and met many parents who worked in Silicon Valley. She landed a job at PDI (which would soon become DreamWorks) through one of them. The film industry was disrupted during that time and became almost entirely digital. Jane learned to code on the job and applied those skills to every new emerging field she entered.

Her career in Silicon Valley included ten years at Macromedia, which later became Adobe, where she developed products for the emerging internet; three years at LeapFrog Toys, which created precursor technology for the iPhone; and ten years in the internet group at Kaiser Permanente, which disrupted the healthcare industry.

She raised her son and was happily remarried from 2002 until her husband died in 2022.

Jane has written poetry, maintained zazen and tai chi practices, and continued to create animation throughout her life.  She joined Everyday Zen in 2013 after retiring from Kaiser.
