Discussion of Zen Mind Beginner’s Mind – June 10

June 10, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

On Wednesday June 10, we will have our next monthly discussion of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. The chapters for this session are:

  • Negative and Positive
  • Nirvana, the Waterfall
  • Traditional Zen Spirit
Here are some questions to seed the discussion, although of course, we can follow it wherever it leads us!
From Negative and Positive:
The best way is just to practice without saying anything… If we understand this point, we will understand how to talk about Buddhism, and we will have perfect communication. To talk about something will be one of our practices, and to listen to the talk will also be practice.
This sounds kind of self-contradictory! What is he trying to say here?
From Nirvana, the Waterfall:
Whether it is separated into drops or not, water is water. Our life and death are the same thing. When we realize this fact we have no fear of death anymore… To talk about it this way is quite easy, but to have the actual feeling is not so easy.

Not so easy indeed! How does Zen practice help us authentically face out own mortality?

From Traditional Zen Spirit:
Our understanding of Buddhism is not just an intellectual understanding. Our understanding at the same time is its own expression, is the practice itself.
What does it mean for our understanding to be its own expression?

Here is a link to a PDF file of the book. I will also provide some printouts of the three sections.
