DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning\, September 19th\, Heather Shōren Iarusso\, director of Branching Streams and a teacher at San Francisco Zen Center\, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nHeather lives at City Center and is the Branching Streams director\, providing guidance and support for SFZC affiliate sanghas. Before being in this role\, Heather spent nine years total living at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. She completed 17 cloistered\, 90-day practice periods and 10 summers of work practice. Heather has held numerous roles at Tassajara\, including being the supervisor of the meditation hall (ino)\, the head cook (tenzo)\, the director\, and the tanto (head of Zen practice). \nHeather first received the precepts in January 2003 and was ordained as a Zen priest in October 2014. She received Dharma transmission in 2022. Heather holds master’s degrees in communications\, creative writing\, and English literature. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, September 23rd\, Sokaku Kathie Fischer\, teacher at Everyday Zen Foundation\, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nSokaku Kathie Fischer began practicing Zen in 1971 with Sojun Mel Weitsman at the Berkeley Zen Center. She was ordained a Zen priest at San Francisco Zen Center in 1980 by Zentatsu Richard Baker\, and continued residential practice at Zen Center for 15 more years. She received Dharma transmission from Sojun Weitsman in 2011 while in the midst of her 28-year career as a school teacher in Mill Valley. Since retiring from teaching science to adolescents she has turned her attention to studying and teaching Dharma. Jaune works as the Executive Director of Tamalpais Trust\, a philanthropic foundation which supports and helps to protect Indigenous Peoples’ sacred lands and waters\, cultural and human rights\, gender empowerment\, and global justice alliance-building.
