He practiced at the San Francisco Zen Center for 25 years\, serving as co-abbot from 1995 to 2000\, when he founded the Everyday Zen Foundation\, which he continues to lead. An author and poet\, his most recent Dharma books are When You Greet Me I Bow: Notes and Reflections From a Life in Zen; Mountains and Rivers Sutra: Teachings by Norman Fischer; and The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path. She was ordained a Zen priest at San Francisco Zen Center in 1980 by Zentatsu Richard Baker\, and continued residential practice at Zen Center for 15 more years. She received Dharma transmission from Sojun Weitsman in 2011 while in the midst of her 28-year career as a school teacher in Mill Valley. Since retiring from teaching science to adolescents she has turned her attention to studying and teaching Dharma. It’s rooted in Uposatha Days and is used to renew our vows and realign our intentions. We gather to practice mindfulness through physical and vocal participation. The ceremony will be led by Travis Marsot. \n– Chant & Response: We’ll engage in melodic chanting. The leader will offer a line\, and the community will respond\, creating a meditative flow of sound. \n– Prostrations: We’ll perform traditional prostrations\, a practice of grounding and humility that connects our physical presence to our spiritual path. \n

Neal has led meditation groups for physicians and stroke recovery patients at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek\, California. He has volunteered with Berkeley-based Seva Foundation sharing advanced cataract surgery skills while learning local techniques in Asia and South America since 2005. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, August 5th\, Dan Zigmond\, Zen teacher\, executive coach\, and Board Chair of San Francisco Zen Center\, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nDan Zigmond is a Zen teacher and executive coach. For three decades\, he worked as a technology executive and data scientist in Silicon Valley\, leading teams at Apple\, Facebook\, Instagram\, Google\, Microsoft\, and a variety of startups. She was ordained as a Zen priest in 1988 and received Dharma Transmission in 1998 from her teacher\, Les Kaye Roshi\, the founding teacher of Kannon Do Zen Center in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi\, the founder of San Francisco Zen Center. She also received Dharma Transmission in 2025 in the lineage of Kobun Houn Roshi\, the founder of Jikoji Zen Center from teachers Shoho Michael Newhall and Nenzen Pamela Brown. Misha was a teacher at the Peninsula School in Menlo Park for 33 years before retiring in 2022. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning\, September 19th\, Heather Shōren Iarusso\, director of Branching Streams and a teacher at San Francisco Zen Center\, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nHeather lives at City Center and is the Branching Streams director\, providing guidance and support for SFZC affiliate sanghas. Before being in this role\, Heather spent nine years total living at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. She completed 17 cloistered\, 90-day practice periods and 10 summers of work practice. Heather has held numerous roles at Tassajara\, including being the supervisor of the meditation hall (ino)\, the head cook (tenzo)\, the director\, and the tanto (head of Zen practice). \nHeather first received the precepts in January 2003 and was ordained as a Zen priest in October 2014. She received Dharma transmission in 2022. Heather holds master’s degrees in communications\, creative writing\, and English literature. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, September 23rd\, Sokaku Kathie Fischer\, teacher at Everyday Zen Foundation\, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nSokaku Kathie Fischer began practicing Zen in 1971 with Sojun Mel Weitsman at the Berkeley Zen Center. She was ordained a Zen priest at San Francisco Zen Center in 1980 by Zentatsu Richard Baker\, and continued residential practice at Zen Center for 15 more years. She received Dharma transmission from Sojun Weitsman in 2011 while in the midst of her 28-year career as a school teacher in Mill Valley. Since retiring from teaching science to adolescents she has turned her attention to studying and teaching Dharma. There are two parts to the evening and you may join for one or both events. \nPart 1: The Ceremony \n– Time: 6:30 PM \n– Location: Kannon Do\, 1972 Rock St\, Mountain View\, CA 94043 \nThe Full Moon Ceremony\, known as Ryaku Fusatsu\, is a sacred Buddhist tradition dating back 2\,500 years. It’s rooted in Uposatha Days and is used to renew our vows and realign our intentions. We gather to practice mindfulness through physical and vocal participation. The ceremony will be led by Travis Marsot. \n– Chant & Response: We’ll engage in melodic chanting. DESCRIPTION:Kannon Do will host a one-day sitting on Saturday\, October 31st. It is led by Zoketsu Norman Fischer\, founder and director of Everyday Zen Foundation. This day of mindfulness offers a rare opportunity to turn our awareness to the simple activities that sustain our lives\, and that we normally take for granted: breathing\, walking\, eating\, being attentive to the workings of our mind. The distractions and pressures of daily responsibilities diminish\, giving a wider world view a chance to appear\, along with a sense of gratitude and calmness. We encourage you to organize your schedule so that you can attend this one day retreat.
