SUMMARY:Online Buddhism in Society Discussion Series with Troy Williams
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday June 27th\, 10:00am to 11:30am for an online talk and Q&A session with Troy Williams as part of our Buddhism in Society Discussion Series. He will be reflecting on the situation in the country after George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter movement.\n\n\nTroy was born in Chicago and grew up in LA. He became part of a gang as a teenager and was sent to prison when he was just 14. He joined the Buddhist Sangha at California’s San Quentin State Prison\, where he was incarcerated. He says the practice opened up a different world for him and completely transformed his life. \nTroy started a project called Restorative Media to help black men and women coming out of prison as well as young people at risk of going to jail. He has also worked with law enforcement officers to educate them about the importance of their interactions. \n\n“Buddhism in Society” aims to explore and understand how to bring the principles of awareness\, mindfulness and creative responses to difficult problems present in our communities.\n\nPlease Join us via Zoom:\n\nhttps://zoom.us/j/807694090 \nDuring the discussion please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area\, and remember to unmute yourself if you are speaking.

SUMMARY:Online Dharma Talk: Bonnie Sarmiento
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, August 5th\, Bonnie will give a dharma talk titled ” Relative and Ultimate Reality.” It  will be followed by an online discussion. In this talk\, Bonnie will explore the relationship between our sensory world and the universe\, between our egoic self and unlimited self\, and between our small mind and big mind. It is easy to feel trapped in the constraints of our bodies\, feeling separate from all that is. But in truth there is no static abiding self\, we are constantly in motion\, fluctuating and shifting both physically and in our conscious state of mind. Many of the problems we face today – wars\, racism\, men vs. women\, humanity vs. animals and plants\, the extinction of species\, and feelings of isolation all stem from an over identification with the the egoic self. Can we learn to see things beyond our physical senses\, and to be things beyond our physical bodies? When our physical self is in harmony with our multi-dimensional self\, we start to come into a life of balance.  \nPlease Join via Zoom:\nhttps://zoom.us/j/911714224 \nDuring the discussion please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area\, and remember to unmute yourself if you are speaking. The discussion will be recorded. \nKannon Do Wednesday Night Online Meditation Schedule (via Zoom) \nJoin via Zoom:\nhttps://zoom.us/j/911714224 \nOr dial by phone (audio only): \n+16699009128\,\,911714224# \n6:45pm – Online Meditation and Posture Instruction (optional\, recommended for first timers)\n7:10pm – Online Zazen Meditation (Please go on mute if in a noisy area)\n7:50pm – Loving Kindness Meditation\n7:55pm – Dharma Talk\n9:00pm – 9:30pm Online social hangout\, bring your own tea (optional)

SUMMARY:Online Dharma Talk: Bonnie Sarmiento
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, September 23rd\,  Bonnie will give a dharma talk titled “Buddha’s Robe.” It will be followed by an online discussion. In the talk Bonnie will explore what Buddha’s robe symbolizes.  For thousands of years people have passed on the teachings\, the meditation practice\, and the robe of the Buddha. The robe connects us to our ancestors from India\, through China\, Japan\, and beyond. The robe is liberation\, and a ‘field far beyond form and emptiness’. The robe is a teacher\, showing us how to be patient\, resilient\, mindful and modest. The robe is the first instance of the practice of ‘recycling’ and ‘no waste’ as a spiritual practice (that I am aware of). The robe is meditation\, every stitch a refuge\, hand sewn with care. You do not have to be a priest to wear robes. Any serious practitioner can wear lay sitting robes if you want to feel a formal difference in your practice. And anyone can practice sewing\, under the guidance of a Teacher. Anyone can also embrace the teachings of Buddha’s robe without having to physically wear robes. In your normal t-shirt and sweatpants\, you can be a buddha (jeans are not recommended though)! Buddha’s robe does not discriminate. Many pieces are sewn into one fabric\, showing us that ultimately\, we all are one. \n  \nPlease join us via Zoom: \nClicking this link will enable you to join the meeting without entering a password: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/6067111411?pwd=aWtVNWdSZ2RIRkdQUEM5eHV5Wkhkdz09 \nOr you may join by entering in the meeting id and password manually: \nMeeting ID: 606 711 1411\nPasscode: 100088\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,6067111411#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,100088# \nDuring the discussion please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area\, and remember to unmute yourself if you are speaking. SUMMARY:Online Buddhism in Society Discussion Series with Lucy Andrews
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday October 10th\, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. (Pacific Time)\, for an online talk and Q&A session about transformative justice with Lucy Andrews as part of our “Buddhism in Society” Discussion Series. \nLucy co-leads the Unpacking Whiteness program at San Francisco Zen Center and is a PhD candidate in environmental science at UC Berkeley\, where she studies ways to manage water resources that further climate justice and ecosystem health. \n\n\nAt the center of Lucy’s Buddhist practice is a commitment to nonviolence and racial justice. To support this commitment\, Lucy sits on the independent advisory board on policing at UC Berkeley and serves as a mediator for the SEEDS Community Resolution Center\, a nonprofit in the East Bay that provides facilitation\, mediation\, and restorative justice services to community members in conflict as an alternative to judicial and legal systems. \nIn her talk\, “Another Path is Possible: From Carceral Delusions to Transformative Justice\,” Lucy will explore the emergence and persistence of policing and other carceral logics in the United States. She will also highlight ways that we can work together to resist policing and incarceration in our communities\, devise alternate methods for the repair of harm\, and practice justice in multi-racial communities\, as informed by our bodhisattva vows and the desire to end suffering and delusion. \n“Buddhism in Society” aims to explore and understand how to bring the principles of awareness\, mindfulness and creative responses to difficult problems present in our communities. \n\n\nPlease join us via Zoom: \nClicking this link will enable you to join the meeting without entering a password: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/6067111411?pwd=aWtVNWdSZ2RIRkdQUEM5eHV5Wkhkdz09 \nOr you may join by entering in the meeting id and password manually: \nMeeting ID: 606 711 1411\nPasscode: 100088\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,6067111411#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,100088# \nDuring the discussion please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area\, and remember to unmute yourself if you are speaking.
