SUMMARY:A Sense of Something Greater Book Discussion led by Teresa Bouza
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, October 14th\, please join us for a discussion of our abbot emeritus Les Kaye’s  book  A Sense of Something Greater: Zen and the Search for Balance in Silicon Valley.  For Les\, Zen was more than awareness–it is “the continued determination to be authentic in relationships\, to create meaningful\, intimate\, intentional bonds with people\, things\, and the environment.” In the book\, Les’ teachings are paired with interviews with current tech employees and Zen practitioners which were conducted by Teresa. \nTeresa was ordained as a priest by Les\, and is a journalist\, and a caregiver. Born in Latin America and raised in Spain\, she spent the majority of her professional career in the United States. A recipient of the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford\, she worked for The Wall Street Journal\, Spain’s global news agency EFE\, and the TV station Univision. She co-authored A Sense of Something Greater: Zen and the Search for Balance in Silicon Valley with Les. Teresa is grateful for the beauty she found during the years she practiced meditation with her sangha at Kannon Do Zen Center in Mountain View (California). She loves spending time outdoors\, subtle things in the world\, and her Dharma name (Zen Breeze). Currently residing in Spain\, Teresa recently navigated a deeply personal caregiving journey\, providing dedicated care for her mother for seven years until her passing from Alzheimer’s disease last month. Teresa is an instructor for the Zen Caregiving Project where she teaches online classes for family caregivers\, introducing them to practical mindfulness-based approaches and tools to build their emotional resilience. \nFor more information about the book and where it can be purchased\, please see here. \nFor those wishing to join us via Zoom: \nClicking this link will enable you to join the meeting without entering a password: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/6067111411?pwd=aWtVNWdSZ2RIRkdQUEM5eHV5Wkhkdz09 \nOr you may join by entering in the meeting id and password manually: \nMeeting ID: 606 711 1411\nPasscode: 100088\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,6067111411#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,100088# \nDuring the discussion please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area\, and remember to unmute yourself if you are speaking. SUMMARY:One-Day Meditation Retreat led by Zoketsu Norman Fischer
DESCRIPTION:Kannon Do will host a one-day sitting on Saturday\, October 31st. It is led by Zoketsu Norman Fischer\, founder and director of Everyday Zen Foundation. This day of mindfulness offers a rare opportunity to turn our awareness to the simple activities that sustain our lives\, and that we normally take for granted: breathing\, walking\, eating\, being attentive to the workings of our mind. The distractions and pressures of daily responsibilities diminish\, giving a wider world view a chance to appear\, along with a sense of gratitude and calmness. We encourage you to organize your schedule so that you can attend this one day retreat. If you are interested in attending or have questions\, please contact Dan Geiger at dan@dangeiger.com. \nZoketsu Norman Fischer was ordained by Zentatsu Richard Baker in 1980 and received shiho (Dharma transmission) from Sojun Mel Weitsman in 1988. He practiced at the San Francisco Zen Center for 25 years\, serving as co-abbot from 1995 to 2000\, when he founded the Everyday Zen Foundation\, which he continues to lead. An author and poet\, his most recent Dharma books are When You Greet Me I Bow: Notes and Reflections From a Life in Zen; Mountains and Rivers Sutra: Teachings by Norman Fischer; and The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path. His most recent poetry titles include Through a Window\, Men in Suits: A Poem\, and Selected Poems (1980-2013). His websites are NormanFischer.org and EverydayZen.org. Norman and his wife Kathie have been married for more than four decades. \n
