She recently moved to Enso Village\, a Zen-inspired Senior Living Community in Healdsburg. Tova was priest-ordained in 2003 and received Dharma transmission from Eijun Linda Cutts in 2015. Tova is the Branching Streams Director\, supporting and connecting the 80+ Zen Centers and sanghas in the Suzuki Roshi lineage. She also writes blogs for SFZC’s online newsletter\, Sangha News. Tova co-founded SFZC’s Queer Dharma group and has been involved in Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging initiatives during her twenty-four years as a resident. She has worked with those who are approaching death as a hospice social worker and as a priest. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning\, July 19th Zoketsu Norman Fischer\, founder and director of Everyday Zen Foundation\, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nZoketsu Norman Fischer was ordained by Zentatsu Richard Baker in 1980 and received shiho (Dharma transmission) from Sojun Mel Weitsman in 1988. He practiced at the San Francisco Zen Center for 25 years\, serving as co-abbot from 1995 to 2000\, when he founded the Everyday Zen Foundation\, which he continues to lead. An author and poet\, his most recent Dharma books are When You Greet Me I Bow: Notes and Reflections From a Life in Zen; Mountains and Rivers Sutra: Teachings by Norman Fischer; and The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path. His most recent poetry titles include Through a Window\, Men in Suits: A Poem\, and Selected Poems (1980-2013). His websites are NormanFischer.org and EverydayZen.org. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, July 23rd\, Jamie Howell will give an in-person Dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nKogen Seido Jamie Howell was raised in São Paulo\, Brazil\, and Lubbock\, Texas. He came to California in 1967 and began his Zen practice with Joshu Sasaki Roshi in 1979. After four years of study with Sasaki Roshi\, Jamie joined the San Francisco Zen Center and began studying with Daiyu Michael Wenger. He was Shuso in 2005 and received Lay Entrustment in 2011. Since then\, he has studied with Monja Coen in São Paulo and Rachel Mansfield Howlett in Santa Rosa and has taught at the San Francisco Zen Center\, Dragon’s Leap Hermitage (San Francisco)\, and extensively on Zoom. Jamie lives in Noe Valley with his wife of 55 years\, Heidi\, and his 11-year-old rescue mutt\, Parker. This sitting will be led by Renshin Bunce\, a dharma transmitted teacher associated with the Everyday Zen Foundation. The sitting will take place in our zendo\, with lunch and tea being served. The suggested contribution for the day is $50 per person (less if you are financially constrained)\, which will pay for food and teacher dana. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, September 3rd\, Ernie Boyer will give a Way Seeking Mind talk followed by a discussion. \nErnie Boyer first began exploring Zen over 50 years ago. It has been a long and meandering journey. (The tree in the background of his picture is the Bodhi Tree in India\, under which the Buddha sat and became enlightened.) Along the way he decided that he was a Christian as well as a Buddhist. He got a doctorate in theology and worked for a number of years as a hospital chaplain before becoming an Episcopal Priest. (The Episcopal Church is a Christian denomination\, a sort of very liberal form of Catholicism.)  He first began to sit at Kannon Do in 2008. He attended the daily noon sittings that were then available 2-3 times a week until they were suspended. He returned to Kannon Do last October\, determined to give himself fully to the practice. He now sits with the group every morning at 5:30 and has helped initiate a noon sitting on Thursdays. He is also a member of the Kannon Do board. He lives in Mountain View and is currently the priest at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Gilroy. He sees no conflict in this whatsoever\, believing\, in fact\, that he could not be a Christian without also being a Buddhist. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, September 24th\, Alan Block will give an in-person Dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nAlan Block is entrusted as a teacher of Zen Buddhism by Zoketsu Norman Fischer in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki of the San Francisco Zen Center. Alan originally studied with Zentatsu Richard Baker and has been with Everyday Zen from its inception.  He worked in construction for 30 years and previously taught history at the college level. Alan leads an Everyday Zen sitting group\, Silent Bell Sangha\, emphasizing meditation and a Buddhist approach to life in the East Bay. The Priest Group of currently active Kannon Do priests will meet after the training session from 11:30am to 12:30pm. Both sessions\, led by Misha Shungen Merrill\, are by invitation only\, and will be held in the zendo. \nMisha received Dharma Transmission from Les Kaye Roshi in 1998\, and has been the guiding teacher for Zen Heart Sangha in Woodside\, California since 1990. She has recently become an Affiliate Teacher at Kannon Do. \n
