SUMMARY:In-Person Dharma Talk: Eli Brown-Stevenson
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, April 15th\, Eli Brown-Stevenson will give a Way Seeking Mind talk followed by a discussion. \nGreeting the world with a warm bow—Rev. So On Eli Brown-Stevenson is a Soto Zen priest and the Director of Inclusion and Belonging at San Francisco Zen Center. His work integrates Zen practice with DEIA principles\, emphasizing how both traditions involve studying the conditioned self\, examining harm\, and cultivating belonging—internally and externally. Eli is especially committed to fostering direct\, embodied engagement with inclusion\, moving beyond aspirational ideals toward grounded\, relational practice.\n\nHe is particularly inspired by how Zen practice reinvigorates and expresses our shared humanity\, offering clarity and compassion in an ever-changing\, technological world. Rather than separating inner transformation from social responsibility\, Eli explores how the inner sense of belonging cultivated through Zen relates to the external realities of inclusion and exclusion.\n\nEli received priest ordination from Rinso Ed Sattizahn in 2019 and has trained at all three of SFZC’s temples. He currently resides at City Center with his daughter\, Maya. For over half a decade\, he has brought mindfulness practice to grade school classrooms and BIPOC youth communities\, and he is one of the guiding facilitators for Young Urban Zen program at SFZC.\nPlease join us via Zoom: \nClicking this link will enable you to join the meeting without entering a password: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/6067111411?pwd=aWtVNWdSZ2RIRkdQUEM5eHV5Wkhkdz09 \nOr you may join by entering in the meeting id and password manually: \nMeeting ID: 606 711 1411\nPasscode: 100088\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,6067111411#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,100088# \nDuring the discussion please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area\, and remember to unmute yourself if you are speaking. The discussion will be recorded. \nKannon Do Wednesday Night Online Meditation Schedule (via Zoom) \n7:10 pm to 7:50 – Zazen Meditation (Please go on mute if in a noisy area)\n7:50 pm to 8:00 pm – Service (We will be connecting with the Zendo)\n7:55 pm to 9:00 pm – Dharma talk and Q&A

SUMMARY:Group Practice Discussion "Actualizing Zen Vows in the World"
DESCRIPTION:Following the Precepts series\, Victoria Austin will lead a practice discussion with the theme “Actualizing Zen Vows in the World”. \nActualizing Zen Vows in the World\n \nThe Bodhisattva Precepts can be studied at the level of ultimate truth\, relative truth\, and skill in action. Keizan Zenji\, co-founder of Sōtō Zen in Japan\, held work practice as of such high priority in the study of skillful means that he read the descriptions of the main training roles to the community at the beginning of every month. Not only did he emphasize mutual accountability of each position to every other and to the sangha as a whole\, but he also taught accountability from the sangha towards each role. To him\, mutual accountability made the difference between the precepts as an idea and the precepts as transformative practice in the world.\n \nHow do we translate his teachings of 900 years ago for our needs in the present day? In this group practice discussion\, we will expand our understanding of the precepts using Keizan Zenji’s model to examine our application of the precepts to issues in our work and home life.\n \nParticipants of a wide variety of work experience and levels of commitment to Buddhist practice are welcome.\n\n\n \nShōsan Victoria Austin’s original work training was in architecture and urban planning\, with a minor in East Asian Studies. She has held many work roles in San Francisco Zen Center\, including in SFZC’s early businesses\, the Accounting Office\, Work Leader\, Corporate Secretary\, Tenzo\, Director\, Abbots’ Assistant\, Tanto\, President\, and Outreach Director. Since the 2000s she has been exploring how to write practice-based job descriptions to explore community\, intimacy and interconnection in people’s roles in the outer world\, as well as in the cloistered world of temple life.\n \nVictoria Austin is a Dharma heir in Shunryu Suzuki Roshi’s Soto Zen lineage and former President of San Francisco Zen Center\, where she has held senior roles including Tanto and Tenzo.Since beginning practice in 1971\, she has become a Senior Intermediate Iyengar yoga teacher (certified 1988)\, teacher educator\, and assessor\, teaching both traditions in ways that make them accessible across diverse settings and abilities. \n\n\nSign up here: \n\n\n \n\n\n\n Your name\n \n \n Your email\n \n \n\n \nThis form uses Akismet to reduce spam.
