Neal has led meditation groups for physicians and stroke recovery patients at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek\, California. He has volunteered with Berkeley-based Seva Foundation sharing advanced cataract surgery skills while learning local techniques in Asia and South America since 2005. SUMMARY:In-person Dharma Talk:  Sokaku Kathie Fischer
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, July 22nd\, Sokaku Kathie Fischer\, teacher at Everyday Zen Foundation\, will give an in-person dharma talk followed by a discussion. \nSokaku Kathie Fischer began practicing Zen in 1971 with Sojun Mel Weitsman at the Berkeley Zen Center. She was ordained a Zen priest at San Francisco Zen Center in 1980 by Zentatsu Richard Baker\, and continued residential practice at Zen Center for 15 more years. She received Dharma transmission from Sojun Weitsman in 2011 while in the midst of her 28-year career as a school teacher in Mill Valley. Since retiring from teaching science to adolescents she has turned her attention to studying and teaching Dharma. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, June 23rd\, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Kannon Do will host a Baika-ryū Eisanka event led by Rev. Monen Ishikawa\, who serves as a Baika-ryu Specialty Teacher since 2015.  Baika-ryū Eisanka is a type of Japanese Buddhist hymn created by the Soto Zen School in 1952. \nThrough chanting these hymns\, practitioners study the teachings of the Buddha (Shakyamuni)\, as well as the founding teachers of the Sōtō Zen tradition\, Dōgen Zenji and Keizan Zenji. Based on a spirit of vow and commitment\, Baika-ryū is not only about chanting but also about putting these teachings into practice in daily life.  At each temple\, people gather to learn devotion and practice\, with a joyful emphasis on chanting together. By coming together\, participants wish for each other’s happiness\, support one another through suffering and difficulties\, and encourage one another in a spirit of harmony. He came to California in 1967 and began his Zen practice with Joshu Sasaki Roshi in 1979. After four years of study with Sasaki Roshi\, Jamie joined the San Francisco Zen Center and began studying with Daiyu Michael Wenger. He was Shuso in 2005 and received Lay Entrustment in 2011. Since then\, he has studied with Monja Coen in São Paulo and Rachel Mansfield Howlett in Santa Rosa and has taught at the San Francisco Zen Center\, Dragon’s Leap Hermitage (San Francisco)\, and extensively on Zoom. SUMMARY:In-Person Dharma Talk: Abbot Jiryu Rutschman-Byler
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, June 3rd\, Jiryu Rutschman-Byler\, co-Abbot of San Francisco Zen Center and Green Gulch Farm Abiding Abbot\, will give an in-person Dharma talk on Becoming Yourself\, a collection of talks by Suzuki Roshi that he co-edited. The talk will be followed by a discussion. \nJiryu Rutschman-Byler is a Soto Zen Buddhist priest and teacher in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi\, with dharma transmission from Sojun Mel Weitsman. Jiryu has trained residentially in Zen temples since 1996\, and currently serves as a co-Abbot of San Francisco Zen Center through his role as Abiding Abbot of Green Gulch Farm Zen Center. \nJiryu is the co-editor of a new collection of talks by Suzuki Roshi\, Becoming Yourself. He is also the author of the book Two Shores of Zen\, about his experiences in 2002 to 2004 as an American-trained monk practicing in Japanese Zen monasteries\, and his writing has appeared in Buddhist periodicals in print and online. \nJiryu is a mentor and preceptor to the Montaña de Silencio Sangha in Medellín\, Colombia\, and for many years served as the head teacher of the Buddhadharma Sangha of San Quentin State Prison. SUMMARY:Full Moon Ceremony & Moonlight Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Sunday\, May 31st for an evening of ancient tradition and mindful movement under the light of the full moon. There are two parts to the evening and you may join for one or both events. \nPart 1: The Ceremony \n– Time: 8:00 PM \n– Location: Kannon Do\, 1972 Rock St\, Mountain View\, CA 94043 \nThe Full Moon Ceremony\, known as Ryaku Fusatsu\, is a sacred Buddhist tradition dating back 2\,500 years. It’s rooted in Uposatha Days and is used to renew our vows and realign our intentions. We gather to practice mindfulness through physical and vocal participation. The ceremony will be led by Travis Marsot. \n– Chant & Response: We’ll engage in melodic chanting. The leader will offer a line\, and the community will respond\, creating a meditative flow of sound. \n– Prostrations: We’ll perform traditional prostrations\, a practice of grounding and humility that connects our physical presence to our spiritual path. \nPart 2: The Moonlight Hike \n– Time: Meet at 8:35 PM in the parking lot \n– Route: Permanente Creek Trail (toward Google Campus and back) \nIf you can’t attend the ceremony\, you’re welcome to meet us at the Kannon Do parking lot at 8:35 PM to begin the hike. \n– Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours. \nExperience a peaceful walk to enjoy the night air and connect with the community. \nWhat to Bring & Wear: \n– Wear supportive walking or hiking shoes. \n– Dress in layers as it may get chilly after sunset. \n– Stay hydrated during our 90-minute stroll.

DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, May 27th\, Misha Shungen Koun Merrill will give an in-person dharma talk at the Kannon Do Meditation Center.  Misha’s talk will be followed by time for questions and discussion. \nMisha Shungen Koun Merrill began practicing Zen in 1984\, and has been the Guiding Teacher of Zen Heart Sangha in Menlo Park and Woodside\, California\, since 1993. She was ordained as a Zen priest in 1988 and received Dharma Transmission in 1998 from her teacher\, Les Kaye Roshi\, the founding teacher of Kannon Do Zen Center in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi\, the founder of San Francisco Zen Center. She also received Dharma Transmission in 2025 in the lineage of Kobun Houn Roshi\, the founder of Jikoji Zen Center from teachers Shoho Michael Newhall and Nenzen Pamela Brown. Misha was a teacher at the Peninsula School in Menlo Park for 33 years before retiring in 2022.
