SUMMARY:Baika-ryū Eisanka Event
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, June 23rd\, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Kannon Do will host a Baika-ryū Eisanka event led by Rev. Monen Ishikawa\, who serves as a Baika-ryu Specialty Teacher since 2015.  Baika-ryū Eisanka is a type of Japanese Buddhist hymn created by the Soto Zen School in 1952. \nThrough chanting these hymns\, practitioners study the teachings of the Buddha (Shakyamuni)\, as well as the founding teachers of the Sōtō Zen tradition\, Dōgen Zenji and Keizan Zenji. Based on a spirit of vow and commitment\, Baika-ryū is not only about chanting but also about putting these teachings into practice in daily life.  At each temple\, people gather to learn devotion and practice\, with a joyful emphasis on chanting together. By coming together\, participants wish for each other’s happiness\, support one another through suffering and difficulties\, and encourage one another in a spirit of harmony. In this way\, they aspire to live bright\, compassionate\, and meaningful lives together. \nFor those wishing to join us via Zoom: \nClicking this link will enable you to join the meeting without entering a password: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/6067111411?pwd=aWtVNWdSZ2RIRkdQUEM5eHV5Wkhkdz09 \nOr you may join by entering in the meeting id and password manually: \nMeeting ID: 606 711 1411\nPasscode: 100088\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,6067111411#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,100088# \nDuring the event please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area.

SUMMARY:One-Day Meditation Retreat led by Sokaku Kathie Fischer
DESCRIPTION:The sitting will be led by Sokaku Kathie Fischer\, teacher at Everyday Zen Foundation. This day of mindfulness offers a rare opportunity to turn our awareness to the simple activities that sustain our lives\, and that we normally take for granted: breathing\, walking\, eating\, being attentive to the workings of our mind. The distractions and pressures of daily responsibilities diminish\, giving a wider world view a chance to appear\, along with a sense of gratitude and calmness. \nWe encourage you to organize your schedule so that you can attend this one day retreat. If you are interested in attending or have questions\, please contact Dan Geiger at dan@dangeiger.com. \nSokaku Kathie Fischer began practicing Zen in 1971 with Sojun Mel Weitsman at the Berkeley Zen Center. She was ordained a Zen priest at San Francisco Zen Center in 1980 by Zentatsu Richard Baker\, and continued residential practice at Zen Center for 15 more years. She received Dharma transmission from Sojun Weitsman in 2011 while in the midst of her 28-year career as a school teacher in Mill Valley. Since retiring from teaching science to adolescents she has turned her attention to studying and teaching Dharma. Kathie and her husband Norman are parents of adult twin sons and grandparents of three children. \nSEE THE SCHEDULE FOR THE ONE DAY SITTING \nREGISTER HERE: \nhttps://forms.gle/bWsiBHSB6DFKWapV6

SUMMARY:Zen Work Lab - Talk about Zen\, Work and AI
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first in a series of monthly discussions about Zen and work.  \nFree admission\, no need to register  \nWho’s in the Kitchen? Zen\, Work\, and AI Slop\nYou’ve all seen the LinkedIn post that performs insight without containing any. In 1237\, Dogen wrote instructions for the monastery cook\, arguing that how you prepare a meal is inseparable from your responsibility to the people eating it. Eight centuries later\, AI gives us the ability to produce work that looks like care without any care having occurred. \nPhilippe Alexis will use Dogen to explore how AI can make us careless. He has been practicing Zen mediation and yoga for the past 30 years. He is on the board of Kannon Do. Professionally\, he is the CEO of nodiamonds.com and is currently building an AI-powered UX Audit called UXguru.  \nSchedule: \n6:30 Intro to meditation \n6:45 Short sitting \n7:00 Talk \n7:30 Discussion \n8:00 Wrap up

SUMMARY:In-Person Dharma Talk: Eli Brown-Stevenson
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday evening\, April 15th\, Eli Brown-Stevenson will give a Way Seeking Mind talk followed by a discussion. \nGreeting the world with a warm bow—Rev. So On Eli Brown-Stevenson is a Soto Zen priest and the Director of Inclusion and Belonging at San Francisco Zen Center. His work integrates Zen practice with DEIA principles\, emphasizing how both traditions involve studying the conditioned self\, examining harm\, and cultivating belonging—internally and externally. Eli is especially committed to fostering direct\, embodied engagement with inclusion\, moving beyond aspirational ideals toward grounded\, relational practice.\n\nHe is particularly inspired by how Zen practice reinvigorates and expresses our shared humanity\, offering clarity and compassion in an ever-changing\, technological world. Rather than separating inner transformation from social responsibility\, Eli explores how the inner sense of belonging cultivated through Zen relates to the external realities of inclusion and exclusion.\n\nEli received priest ordination from Rinso Ed Sattizahn in 2019 and has trained at all three of SFZC’s temples. He currently resides at City Center with his daughter\, Maya. For over half a decade\, he has brought mindfulness practice to grade school classrooms and BIPOC youth communities\, and he is one of the guiding facilitators for Young Urban Zen program at SFZC.\nPlease join us via Zoom: \nClicking this link will enable you to join the meeting without entering a password: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/6067111411?pwd=aWtVNWdSZ2RIRkdQUEM5eHV5Wkhkdz09 \nOr you may join by entering in the meeting id and password manually: \nMeeting ID: 606 711 1411\nPasscode: 100088\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,6067111411#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,100088# \nDuring the discussion please mute yourself if you are in a noisy area\, and remember to unmute yourself if you are speaking.
