Please join us on Saturday, January 23rd, 8:30 am to 10:00 am (Pacific Time) for a sutra class with Kathy Early. It will be the first of a year-long monthly class with Kathy. Registration is required. Please see the link below.
Titled “The Voice of the Buddha,” the class aims to provide an avenue for practitioners at Kannon Do to engage with primary-source Buddhist texts; to encourage awakening of the deepest meaning of the Buddha’s teachings; to pique interest in further study of primary texts; to offer an inkling of the extraordinary vastness of the ocean of teachings; to familiarize participants with some of the main terms, groupings, and lists expounded by the Buddha; and to illustrate how core teachings that appear in the Pali Canon are not discarded, but rather appear again and again – albeit is sometimes altered form – throughout Mahayana sutras, such as the Flower Ornament Scripture.
Shōku Kathy Early came to zen practice in 1994 through classes she took with Tenshin Reb Anderson, at the Yoga Room, in Berkeley. At that time she worked in Silicon Valley as a semiconductor engineer. In 1996, Kathy joined Kannon Do where she practiced closely with Abbot Keido Les Kaye. In 2000, she moved to San Francisco Zen Center, where she lived and trained for 16 years, receiving priest ordination from Tenshin Anderson, at Green Gulch Farm, in 2005. She also spent roughly a year and a half in residence at Toshoji International Training Monastery, Okayama, Japan.
