Guest Speaker: Elie Calhoun

Elie Calhoun is a social entrepreneur using technology to solve poverty and inequality problems in the world’s most challenging places.
Originally from Montana, Elie has lived most of her adult life in Africa, where she has witnessed extreme poverty. She worked for almost a decade with UNICEF on technology, health and education projects.  She has co-founded social business start-ups in Egypt, Tanzania, Liberia and Senegal that continue to create jobs.
Elie currently leads the Wellness faculty of Singularity University’s Global Solutions Program.  She designed the leadership development curriculum of Singularity’s summer program, supporting 90 leaders from over 40 countries as they collaborate to create start-ups that use exponential technology to solve humanity’s biggest challenges. This year’s focus is on climate change.
Elie is dedicated to bringing health and happiness to a world of chronic stress and accelerating change. In addition to her journalism and research, she has authored several travel and children’s books about East and North Africa and continues to write about gender, global health, the future and technology.  Elie lives with her husband in Aotearoa New Zealand, where she is writing another book.
Her topic for August 2 will be:  “Changemaking.”
